Fire, help us

Jude 1:23

Whatis more alarming than an outbreak of fire? What excitement ! What fearfulness! What self sacrificing efforts to save the perishing from the blazing fire (Jh.10:9) “I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.”

Those who come for salvation to Christ, shall obtain it, We shall be saved, we shall have our sins blotted out, our soul purified and we shall be preserved unto eternal life.

The fire of sin broke out in Eden, and has spread over the whole world.

Those who come for salvation to Christ, shall obtain it: he shall be saved, he shall have his sins blotted out, his soul purified, and he will be preserved unto eternal life.

The only way of escape is by that ladder which Jacob saw, which reaches from earth to Heaven “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. (John 14. 6).

Let us think of the Nature of Sin. It is compared here to “fire.” Fire is an element that can neither be weighed nor measured. Is there a hell fire? According to (Mt 25:41) there is, “Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels.”

Hell is the hell of the damned, they must everlastingly depart from, and lose the presence of Christ:

Hell is a place where one is deprived of infinite good forever.

Hell is a deep dungeon, where the sunshine of God’s presence never cometh.

There will be everlasting torments in hell prepared for the wicked; there is a state of torment, and a place of torment, provided by God.

The nature of the damned’s misery is set out by fire; the whole man, body and soul, shall be tormented in it.

The soul shall suffer in hell, by reflecting upon its own choice, by remembering time sinfully wasted, seasons of grace sadly slighted, the mercies of God unworthily abused.

Christ speaks of this eternal misery by fire, as designed originally not for man, but for the devil and his angels; but man, by giving up himself to the power and slavery of sin and Satan, and working himself down to the departed regions, becomes like unto him in torments, whom he so much resembled in manners and qualities.

Who can set a boundary to the workings of sin, or reckon up its capabilities and effects?

The nature of sin, like fire, is to mar or destroy all that comes within its grasp that is not able to resist its mighty influence (Jh 10:10) “ The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.”

Jesus did not come into the world to destroy us, are his church, but to save us,

He has come that we might have a spiritual life, and at last eternal life; that we might live the life of grace here.

He has come that we might have a life of glory hereafter; and not only that we may barely live but that our life may abound, through the upholdings, strengthenings, quickenings, and comfortings of his holy and gracious Spirit.

It is the desire of Jesus for his beloved to not only drink spiritually, but drink abundantly; not only live, but live abundantly furnished with all the rewards and supply of a spiritual life.

Sin is an unquenchable fire, as far as the wisdom and power of man is concerned (Rom. 5:12) tell us “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:”

The sinner is in Danger of hell. The sinner must be pulled out of the fire, it is clear that he must be in the fire.

He is living under the power and dominion of sin, (Rom. 6:15) “What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid. Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?”

There is a reward for the righteous, and wages for the workers of iniquity.

The devil’s toil shall have full pay, but no content; the wages of sin is death; there’s pay, such as it is, woeful pay.

God’s servants, though they do not work for wages, yet they shall not work for nothing! Verily there is a reward for the righteous; a reward of mercy, not of merit; a reward of grace, not of debt:

The sinner may be utterly unconscious of his awful position, but the end is destruction all the same.

To be in a state of sin is to be in a state of condemnation. Sin, like fire, when it is finished, bringeth forth death according to (Ja,1:15).

There is a need to Rescue man from his sin and hell fire, “Pulling them out of the fire. ”

There are only two ways whereby a brand can be saved from the burning: either put out the fire, or pull out the brand.

Men cannot put out the fire of sin, so sinners must be pulled out of the fire.

In this world of sin the Church is God’s rescue party sent to pull men out of the fire. (II.Cor. 5:20) “ Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ’s stead, be ye reconciled to God.”

God and man were once friends, God and man are now enemies, man, and not God, first made the breach of friendship, though man was first in the breach, yet God is the first to offer reconciliation.

Therefore it is the highest duty and chiefest interest of man to accept the terms of peace and reconciliation with God.

That in order to do all this, the great duty given to the ministers of the gospel, is this, with all earnestness to press upon people the doctrine of reconciliation, and to persuade them to become reconciled unto God “be ye reconciled to God.”

There is no escape from sin’s destructive power but by being separated from it “Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God,”(Rom.1:1)
