The vessel needs work

Jeremiah 18:1,6
The Lord claims right to Divine sovereignty over all creation. God claims from mankind is an acknowledgment of His power and right to do as he pleases in the affairs of people and angels.

The Lord formed the heavens and the earth, the sea and the dry land, he made all the creatures upon the earth, who by His power and His might sustains them, must possess both the power and the right to regulate all their affairs and all their movements.

There is none so able as the Lord our God to govern, to choose our lot and to regulate our ways.

His understanding is infinite, His power is unlimited and wonderful, and His goodness equals them both.

Jeremiah the prophet of the Lord is sent to the house of a potter that he might get an objective lesson on the work and will of God. (I.Cor.10:11) Tells us what happened to Israel was for our example ” Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.” (I.Cor.10:11).

God can put a new meaning into the common affairs of life. Pentecost was a new thing for the disciples of Christ, “And they were all amazed, and were in doubt, saying one to another, What meaneth this?” (Ac.2:12).

The prophet is lowly enough to obey the call, and willing enough to learn the mind of and will of God, “Then I went down to the potter’s house, and, behold, he wrought a work on the wheels,” (v.3).

Ananias, in the book of Acts was willing to obey the Lord in (Ac.9:15) “But the Lord said unto him, Go thy way: for he is a chosen vessel unto me, to bear my name before the Gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel:”

According to (Rom.8:29) we are predestinate to be the children of God, “For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.”

The Clay represents the “house of Israel” (v.6). Israel were taken out of Egypt, and brought into the land of Canaan, the great Potter’s house where He desired to work in His people.

The church is a place to receive Bible teaching and to learn how we must serve the Lord according to, (II.Tim. 4:2) “Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.”

Like Israel, we have been taken out of the clay pit of darkness and slavery, and brought into the Kingdom of Jesus Christ, that He might fashion us after His own image. The clay is the raw material, “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

The Wheels are the sure work of providence,  “Behold, he wrought a work on the wheels. ” The wheels are God’s promises, purposes, laws and providence itself, all these things are working together for our good according to (Rom.8: 28) “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”

Being in the Kingdom of God we are in the special favour and grace of God, “And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.”(Jh.10:28).

All our circumstances are but the wheels in which our spiritual character is being worked out. Jesus was preparing Peter to be one of the great apostles in, (Mt,16:19)“And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”

We should not shirk our tribulations knowing that “tribulations worketh patience, and patience experience, hope.” (Rom.5:3,4).

The Potter is Jesus Christ  our Lord our Saviour. “Behold, as the clay is in the potter’s hand, so are ye in Mine hand, 0 house of Israel.” Jesus, our Lord Himself is the Potter. Think of the possibilities there are for us in Christ. “And Samuel grew, and the LORD was with him, and did let none of his words fall to the ground.” (I.Sam.3:19).

Think of your position, and of His purpose with you in placing His mighty hand upon you.

The Potter’s purpose is to make the best possible use of the material that is in His hand, ”But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you.” (I.Pt.5:10).

It is hand the of God who worketh in us both to will and to do of His good pleasure.

Let us look at the the Vessel, “The vessel that he made was marred in the hand of the potter, so he made it again another vessel.”

Even in the hand of the Divine Potter the vessel (Israel) was marred, “And Peter remembered the word of Jesus, which said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. And he went out, and wept bitterly.” (Mt.26:75).

Through disobedience we may become another dishonoured vessel.

Because of unbelief Israel has been cut off, and are still, as a nation, a marred vessel.

Take heed lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief. If the hand of God, is to fashion us into a vessel meet for the Master’s use, there must be no unyielding part in our nature, “Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.” (Rom.6:13).

A perverse will, or a self seeking will, will hinder and mar the work of the Heavenly Potter, whose gentle hands are so sensible to the least resistance, ”Quench not the Spirit.” (I.Thes.5:19).

Every backslider is a marred vessel. Many like Saul, are marred because they have disobeyed the Word of the Lord.

Let us look at (v.6) “Cannot I do with you as this potter ? saith the Lord.” Thank God, although the vessel has been marred, “He can make it again, another vessel.”

The regenerating Spirit of our God is able to restore the marred vessel into something like the image of Him who worketh in you mightily, “forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God:” (I.Cor.11:7). Jesus Christ desires to make us like him.

The vessel may have been dishonoured by resistance, but it has not been disowned.

Can God do with you as this potter ? Can He ? Are you as clay, soft, flexible, and refined, in His hand ? We need to say to the Lord, have thine own way in our life.

If so, the Potter’s purpose may yet be fulfilled in you.

He still needs vessels to bear His Name (character) among the nations of the earth. The apostle Paul was to teach the name of Jesus to the gentles, “But the Lord said unto him, Go thy way: for he is a chosen vessel unto me, to bear my name before the Gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel:”  (Acts 9:15).
