The great outstanding feature of our life as a Christian is that we have life “I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” (Jh.10:10).
Not the common natural life of the flesh, but the new Spirit-begotten life of God, which makes us a newcreation,“ But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance “ (Gal.5:23).
We must have a energetic life. ‘Let us run the race. “ A man in a race is always wide awake. “ This one thing I do“ seems written on his countenance. This is after the fashion of Christ, who ‘‘ set His face like a flint. “ For the Lord GOD will help me; therefore shall I not be confounded: therefore have I set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be ashamed.” (Isa.50:7).
Our life must be a well ordered life. “The race set before us.“ It is not a rush at random, “And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.” (Lk.24: 47).
The apostle declared in (Eph.4:4) “There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; One Lord, one faith, one baptism, One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.”
The course of our Christian life is well defined. The Word of God and the example of Christ make our way plain, Note (II.Tim.3:15) “And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.”
This is the way, run ye in it,“ Not My will, but Thine be done” (Luke 22. 42).
We must have a diligent life. “ Run with patience.” “To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, and eternal life:” (Rom.2:7).
It is the patient endurance of faith as a Christian that will help us reach heaven, “Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.” (Ja.1:3,4).
We have a upward life. “ Looking unto Jesus.” We look unto Him because we press on for the prize of His eternal glory and reward
In steadily beholding Him we are lifted up above the things of earth and conformed into His likeness, “Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which arr before.”(Phil.3:13). The apostle said, “I press on.”
We must have a life of faith. “Looking unto the Author and Finisher of our faith.” It is simply a life of faith in Jesus Christ.
Faith that He who hath begun the good work of faith in our hearts will finish it (II.Tim. 4:7, 8).
A finished faith. What will that be? It will just be according to your faith, “But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.” (Heb.11:6).
We must also have a self -denying life. “ Lay aside every weight.” The apostle stated in (I.Cor. 9:27) “But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.”
When a man is going to run a race he has little regard for the prevailing fashions of the day,“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind,” (Rom.12:2). “If any man will come after me let him deny himself. Our own will and thoughts are but weights to be laid aside, “Lord, what wilt thou have me to do?” (Ac.9:6).
We must have a hopeful life. “Who for the joy that was set before Him.” Christ lived, and suffered, and died in the hope of seeing the travail of His soul.”
Our faithful servant will be rewarded, “Look to yourselves, that we lose not those things which we have wrought, but that we receive a full reward.” (II.Jh.1:8).
If we are faithful we will hear the Lord say unto us, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.” (Mt.25:21).
Salvation is all of grace, but the works of the saved will all be rewarded, “But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead”?(Js.2:20).
Keep in mind we have a public life. “We also are compassed about with a great cloud of witnesses.“ We, like those mentioned in the eleventh chapter, are surrounded with a cloud of witnesses “These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also; (Ac.17:6).
Every individual Christian has a cloud of witnesses.
May we so run our heavenward course that they, too will be led to glorify our Father in Heaven, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven (Mt. 5:16).
May I ask you this question? Are you booked for this race?
