This is a real confession. It is the office of the shepherd to provide good pasture for his sheep.
What blessing has our Lord given us since the Holy Ghost came into our life under grace “For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.” (Rom.14:17).
It is the office of a shepherd to bring back to the fold his wondering sheep, and to guide them in the right paths. O how patience and forbearing has our Lord been with each of us.
It is the office of a shepherd to protect his sheep from danger.
There is the time of the valley of shadow of death, there are seasons of darkness and distress “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil.” (v.4) There are time in our life we go from mountain to mountain and hill to hill and occasionally we pass through the valleys.
Yet, in such seasons the Lord Jesus, as our great Shepherd and Bishop, Overseer our souls, he is with us, and with his pastoral rod and staff protects us “ Thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.” ((v.4).
Note a real confession, David said “He restoreth my soul” (v.3) The lord is our Shepherd. Why? because we have taken our place at his feet as his sheep “and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice.” (Jh.10:4).
We have acknowledges our ignorance, we were all. blinded.,we have acknowledges our waywardness and we have all gone astray. ”We are like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one his own way; “ (Isa.53:6).
We have acknowledges our helplessness, we were undone, we have acknowledges our dependence, I will trust. Job stated “Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him,” (Job 13:15).
We have peaceful Assurance. He is mine, why, because he hath purchased us with his blood. Why, because he hath led us by his Spirit. Why, because he hath fed us with his Word. Why, because he hath kept us by his power “ this is the word of the Lord unto Zerubbabel saying, not by might, nor by, but by my spirit, saith the Lord of host.” (Zech.4:6).
We now have an unwavering confidence in our Shepherd. “I shall not want” (v.1).
All that the Lord does is for our highest good. Why, because his riches are unsearchable, because his power is Almighty, because his faithfulness is unfailing and because his love is unchanging “For I am the the lord, I change not,” (Mal. 3:6).
