The great prophets of Israel were great instructors of the people. They declared the Lord’s laws, they made clear the eternal principles of the moral law, they forecast what must be the future under righteous conditions.
The revelation of ancient prophecy was not continuous and uninterrupted, but it came in flashes, between which there were intervals of darkness.
Sometimes those intervals were long and most distressing to a people that had learn to draw its chief lessons from Divine oracles. Such a time was experienced in the days of Eli “And the child Samuel ministered unto the LORD before Eli. And the word of the LORD was precious in those days; there was no open vision.” (I.Sam.3:1)
We need a heavenly vision. People need to know heavenly truth “And now send men to Joppa, and call for one Simon, he shall tell thee what thou oughtest to do.” (Acts 10:5,6)
This requirement was recognized in the history of Israel on especial grounds, because the people felt themselves to be a divinely directed people, with God for their King and Leader “And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way;” (Ex.12:21)
The fading away of the prophet’s would be like the vanishing of the pillar of cloud and fire in the wilderness, a necessary guidance would be lost.
We must know heavenly truth. In order to do the will of God’s. the servant must know his master’s will if he is to do his duty “Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.” (Jer.1:3)Earthly knowledge is not enough. Heavenly messages are wanted, or the duty to God will be neglected.
People need to know heavenly truth for the saving of their own soul.We are not merely earthly creature. we are naturally related to heaven “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them ” (Gen.1:27)
To be starved of heavenly truth is to be left to perish in earthly worldliness “And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent.” (Acts 17:30)
People cannot discover heavenly truth without the help of God. It must be revealed.
Without a vision from God the world is in spiritual darkness.“Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.” (Mt.16:17)
We can have a heavenly vision. Truth is found in the scripture.
God has not left his people in darkness. Light has fallen from heaven on earth “In him was life; and the life was the light of men.” (Jh.1:4)
The record of old revelation enclose a perpetual vision of God for all who have eyes to behold “for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts.” (Isa.6:5)
It is the duty of the Lord’s people to study the scriptures, to circulate them through out the world and to teach and expound them to the unlearned “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you:” (Mtt.28:20)
We must have personal experience in our own heart “Whereupon, O king Agrippa, I was not disobedient unto the heavenly vision:” (Acts 2613)
Every person can have his own vision, nay, must have it if he would really see the truth “He first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ.” (Jh.1:41)
it is not to be supposed that everyone can be a Daniel or an Ezekiel, can behold Isaiah wonderful vision of God (Isa.6:1) or John’s glorious apocalypse of the heavenly Jerusalem (Rev.21:1) Must less is each man to look for his own separate gospel, and to feel called upon to write his own Testament “There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; One Lord, one faith, one baptism, One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.” (Eph.4:4)
But in the understanding and appreciation of truth we must each see it for ourselves by aid of a Divine inspiration “And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God.” (Jh.20:28))
Visions was predicted by Joel of the new dispensation (Joel 2:28) and declared by Peter “And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: ” (Acts 2:16)
It is possible to lose our heaven vision. God is not unpredictable. If the Divine is silent, this must be because there are no obedient ears to receive it. “Then they cried out with a loud voice, and stopped their ears, and ran upon him with one accord,” (Ac.7:57)
Visions is only withdraw when the eyes of people are so blinded by sin and worldliness that they cannot behold it.God may send a famine of the Word of truth (Amos 8:11) states “Behold, the days come, saith the Lord GOD, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD:”
It is a fearful thing to be incapable of seeing the truth of God or hearing his voice “But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them. For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord;” (II.Cor.4:3)
We need to pray,“Open thou mine eyes (Lk.4:18) and to give new visions of God’s truth (Jh.18:37) says “Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.”
