“Behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to render to each man according as his work is.” (v.12)
When the light of the world shines fully forth, then each man will be found to have the thing for which he has toiled, David said “He hath not dealt with us after our sins, nor rewarded us according to our iniquities.” (Ps.103:5) (3.)
The wages of sin; the gift of God, each will be received in its fullness “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Rom.6:23)
Same people are continually believing there will be some reversal of that law of sowing and reaping, that some shall not reap what they have sown “For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.” (Gal.6:8)
But the fact is, the law of judgment goes on unchangeable from the dawn of our moral life through all the years and ages of our existence;
The sown and reaping are settled facts, so we must not forget ” With what measure we mete, it shall be measured to you again.?” (Mt.7;2)
Every voluntary action vibrates and reverberates through all the ups and downs of our conscious life “The great God that formed all things both rewardeth the fool, and rewardeth transgressors.” (Prov.26:10)
Let me speak about Indifference. How many minds are wrapped up in this? They feel no concern; they are spiritually asleep, as was Jonah literally, as though the ship and all in it nigh to perishing? “But Jonah was gone down into the side of the ship, and he lay, and was fast asleep.” (Jonah.1:5)
The day of Christ’s award is hastening on, and most of the world is asleep. As we set here can we be moved with this word? “Behold!” (v.12)
All of us have Procrastinated in one way are another.
Many, like Felix put off the experience of salvation for a more convenient season, but the fact may be, their may not be a more convenient time “Go thy way for this time, when I have a convenient season, I will call for thee.” (At.24:25)
This is the unforgivable sin, all through life, putting off Jesus until another season “and if the tree fall toward the south, are toward the north, in the place where the tree falleth, there shall it be.” (Ecc.11:3)
Now, as if to protest again and to prevent such conduct, Christ says, “Behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me,” (v.12)
There is no time to delay, “Now is the accepted time, behold, now is the day of salvation.” (II. Cor. 6: 2)
Notions and idea of privilege, we all have them. There were, there are, those who contend themselves to be God’s favorites “Jesus saith unto them, if you were Abraham’s children, ye would do the work of Abraham.” (Jh.8:39)
The Jew did, and, in a very real sense, as they were, but not in such sense as would suffer to be indifferent to the moral demands of God “of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of person:” (Acts 10:34)
Many boast that God would not judge them as he does other “The Pharisee stood and prayed thus himself, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are,” (Lk.18:11)
There are those who feel like they are God’s elect, but who all so pervert the doctrines of grace “What should we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid.” (Rom.6 :1)
Now, as if to meet these peoples thinking, the Lord here makes no difference, but says, “I will give ever man according as his work shall be.” (v.12)
There people who Abuse the doctrine of faith. The doctrine of justification by faith has come in many minds to mean little more than a mere mental reference to the atonement of Christ “Ye see then how by works a man is justified, and not by faith only….For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.” (Ja.2:24)
They think that it is a passport to eternal life. Such people say, Oh, we believe, we trust in Jesus, and with this their faith ends.
But Jesus here declares, not only the reward of works, but also that his reward will be according to each man’s work.
Past experience will not justify us when we stand before the Lord on judgment day.
No sooner does a person discharge the act of sin, retribution is at hand. There is not a moment’s delay “Sin lieth at the door,” (Gen.4:7)
No sooner is the blow struck than its vibration is felt.
It will be each man according to his works. It will be every man as an individual, not man in the mass, but man in the unit.
The Alpha and Omega , the one who originated and who administers this law, the law of sowing and reaping, is the same “yesterday, and to day, and for every.” (Heb.13:6 )
Not one of us can disengage ourselves from our deeds, or break our constraint of responsibilities “For every man shall bear his own burden.” (Gal.6:4)
Our reward will be according to our works. Not according as it once was, but as it is when the Lord come.
Thus, does he beat down these refuges of lies, and take away these battlements which are not the Lord’s.
Our real refuge is to awake now and turn unto the Lord as they who have no hope but in him, and at once to manifest the reality of true repentance and faith by doing those works which he has command “The night is far spent, the day is at hand, let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the Armour of light.” (Rom.13:12)
