John 4:24 “ God is a Spirit.”
In the beginning the Lord created man in his likeness. What did the Lord look like? John 4:24 tells us this about the Lord “…God is a spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.” We must understand that God has no body. In the Old Testament God appeared to man in many different ways.
God revealed himself through a burning bush in Ex.3:4. “…And when the Lord saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses, and he said, Here am I.” We must keep in mind that with God all things are possible.” Mark 9:23 “…Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all thing are possible to him that believeth.” We must not cut God short because of our own impossible.
God is God and who are we to speak against His work; He is the potter and we are the clay. The Lord revealed Himself as an angel. He appeared to Abraham as three angels, not just one angel. Gen.18:2 “…And he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, lo, three men stood by him: and when he saw them, he ran to meet them from the tent door, and bowed himself toward the ground.” God can manifest Himself as one, two or three angels.
The first time we know of God appearing to man was in the book of Gen. 3:10 “...And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid , because I was naked; and I hid myself.” Here, the Lord did not appear as an angel. All that we are aware of is a voice being spoke in the garden. From this time, the Lord spoke to man many times through and by his voice. The greatest way the Lord ever spoke in the Bible is through the person of the Lord Jesus Christ and He made himself known through Jesus. Let me make this very clear; Jesus was not an angel, nor did he speak as an angel, Jesus was God manifest in the flesh. 1.Tim. 3:16 says “…And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh.”
We must keep in mind that there are only two great spiritual forces in the world – the Almighty God, which is a spirit and Satan who is also a spirit. The Bible tells us no man has ever saw God. Why? As we just stated, God is a Spirit and can not be seen. John 24:39 says “…for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have.” The only way God can be manifest is through an earthly form such as an angel, a burning bush or a human body and a few other ways that I will bring to your attention.
The Lord appeared to the children of Israel while leading them through the wilderness, by a cloud by day and a fire by night. Ex. 13:21 states “…And the Lord went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way, and by night a pillar of fire, to give them light, to go by day and night:” Truly the Lord revealed himself to his people through the cloud and the fire. When the cloud moved the people knew it was time to go forward. At night the fire would lead them as well. In every age God has made Himself known to man in one way are another.
There is a small part of earth in heaven this very day. I am sure you are thinking how can this be? Let me explain this from a Bible view. Acts 7:55. “…But he, being full of the Holy Ghost, looked steadfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God.” God is a Spirit and all that Stephen could see was Jesus, Jesus here was the manifestion of the invisible God. Jesus was the first body and the only body that the spirit of God dwelled in. The earthly body of our Lord Jesus is in heaven to day, just a little part of earth in heaven.
The apostle Paul had a personal encounter with the Lord in Acts 9:5..”.And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecute st: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks.” This setting makes it very clear who the Lord is and what His name is. The Lords name is Jesus. This Lord was not just a Sir, but the Almighty God. The apostle was a true believer in the oneness of God, 11 Cor.5:10. “…To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself.” Paul was much like Thomas, he new who his Lord and God was. John 20:28.“…And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God.” Jesus was there God and to all true Bible believers He is ours, as well.
We have used a number of scriptures to prove that God is a Spirit and that He has no bodily form. Now let us notices Gen.1:1,2 “…In the beginning,God created the heaven and the earth.” Verse one tell us who created all thing, Now, let us take a look at verse two “…and the Spirit of God moved upon the faces of the water.” Note, there was no bodily form present at the time of creation. The Father was present only through His Spirit. At this time God did not need a body to create the earth and all living things. God can just speak things in to existence Gen.1:3 “…And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.”The only body that we will ever see of God in heaven is the body of Jesus Christ.
As we have stated, God is a spirit and the only body he has ever dwelled in was the body of Jesus Christ. Let us take a look at Rev,4:1,2 “...After this I looked, and, behold, a door was opened in heaven: and the first voice which I heard was as it were of a trumpet talking with me; which said , Come up hither, and I will shew thee things which must be hereafter.” The voice that John heard was none other than the voice of God. This is not a great mystery, if you understand the wording of the Godhead, the voice that spoke through Jesus is the same voice that John heard as a trumpet talking to him, We need to take a look at (v. 2) .”And immediately I was in the spirit: and, behold, a throne was set in heaven, and one sat on the throne. “ John saw the same person setting on the throne as did Stephen, Stephen saw the Lord Jesus. The one setting on the one throne, no mystery, none other than the Lord Jesus. Be sure to notices that John did not see two or three thrones, he saw only one throne and just one setting on it. In heaven there will not be two or three throne, there will not be two or three people setting on thrones in heaven, just Jesus.
Jesus is the manifestion of the eteranl Spirit, he made it clear that he and the Father was one. John 10:30 “…I and my Father are one.” Before the world begin the Lord had a plan, and that was to reveal himself in the body that he would create. Matt.1:20 “…Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Goly Ghost.” In case you do not understand the Holy Ghost and the Father are one and the same. In other words the Father created a body to dwell in, in order to redeem mankind. If the Father and the Holy Ghost was not one and the same then Jesus would have two father. We know that Jesus had one Father, and that Father was the creater of all thing I Tim.1:17 “…Now unto the King eteral, immoral, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.”
