What is the secret of our hope?

Lamentations 3:21,24
How familiar are we with this words “The Lord is my portion.” This confession is the ground of our hope.

The present hour may be so dark that we can have little joy even in God, Job said “For There is hope of a tree, if it be cut down,” (Job 14:7)

Earthly things are so ill that he can hope little from them. But with God for our portion we can look forward from the troubles of the present and the threatening of earthly calamities to and unearthly joy in the future “the heavens and the earth shall shake: but the Lord will be the hope of his people,” Joel 3:16)

Consider how The Lord can be an Object of hope. We hope in God when we hope in his presence. Let us live in the sunshine of his love and let us enter into communion with him daily “this is written: he that ploweth should plow in hope .(I.Cor. 9:10)

To know God is satisfaction to the mind. To have fellowship with God through love is to have rest and joy in the heart.

To be reconciled to God is to have the trouble of conscience allayed.

We must never forget all the Deepest longing of our soul find their end and satisfaction in God “The Lord is my portion”

Let us consider how God is the one perfect Object of hope. The greatest disappointment of an earthly hope is when the thing anticipated is given to us and yet the joy expected from it is not forthcoming “And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple,” (Mt.27:5)

We secure our treasure and find it to be dross, or we see it to be gold and we find it will not stay the hunger of our soul.

The Lord is higher and deeper and greater than the largest desires of our soul. He is just what we all need for rest and happiness.

Elisha said, “I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me…Thou hast asked a hard thing: nevertheless,” (II.King 2:9,10)

If money is our portion it may be lost, or it may not buy ease of heart, if power, pleasure, success, or any other common end be our portion, we may be most wearied when we have gained most.

Of all things, the Lord is the best ground of hope. We have the greatest assurance that our hope will not fail us when we trust in him, why because he is good.

Bitterness takes pleasure in frustrating hope, cruel people do it with indifference, and selfish and thoughtless people unwittingly.

Wicked men go to hell in bundles, ”Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them:” (Mt.13:30) But Christians people go to heaven individually.

The Lord, who is love it self and who ever regards the needs of his children with mercy and consideration, is to gracious to disappoint the hope we have in him “ But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord.” (I. Cor.15:57,58)

The Lord is the best ground of hope because he is faithful.

He has invited our confidence and promised his inheritance to his obedient and trustful children.

He has pledged his word to his people. Jesus stated, “Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.” (Mt.24:35)

He will never prove false to his promise. When he has promised, and his honor is involved.

The Lord is the best ground of hope because he is Almighty.

With the best intention a man may be compelled to disappoint the confidence that may rest upon him through simple inability to meet it.

The bankrupt cannot pay his debts, however honest he may be.

There is no limit to the power of God, so there will be know failure in him.

The Lord is the best ground of hope because hope in God is lawful and right.

We need not fear that the strictest judgment will condemn our hope in Jesus.

God will never sell his people for any price, nor, if he could have a better people instead, would he change them. We are his forever.

It is a holy hope, and it is therefore likely more and more to be satisfied, as the judgment of God condemns and destroys unworthy objects of ambition. Let us pray, Lord, give me thyself and let us say “ “TheLord is my portion
