Is There light In Your Soul?

Is There light In Your Soul?

Micah 7:8,9

By J. A. Meeks

The scripture is a Word for all mankind, “…When I set in darkness, the Lord shall be a light unto me”.

In order to understand the deep teaching of God’s Word, we must study in the knowledge of our own soul experiences of our joys, pain and needs. It is one thing to be able to comprehend the Bible in the meaning of its words and the construction of its phrases and forms of expression, but it is another thing to feel that it is ours to enter into the spiritual experiences the Bible speaks of.

Darkness has and will come upon every person that lives; we will always be attacked in our mission in life. Life is a pilgrimage, and we cannot expect to reach the end of our journey without feeling taxed and exhausted. Life is a true voyage, and we shall be challenged by many storms of life. This world is our setting and we are the real players, and to outward appearances it may seem that we are acting out our respective parts with much ease, yet who can tell what apprehension is encountered behind the scenes?

There are adverse pressures that meet you and I in our everyday duties. There are often events caused by differences in temper and disposition, allowing rise to misunderstanding, or by temporal circumstances causing great dilemmas, or prolonged anxiety in reference to the success or failure of certain projects, or by baffled hopes and expectations. “…A day of darkness and of gloominess, a day of clouds and of thick darkness, as the morning spread upon the mountains: a great people and a strong; there hath not been ever the like, neither shall be any more after it, even to the years of many generations” (Joel 2:2.)

There is failure of health, with anxious days and weary nights, there is heartache, with its grief and gloom, ether are also cruel misrepresentation, malicious censures, unjust reproaches. Many of these adverse influences follow in quiet succession, they fill our heart with much woe and sadness of spirit, and these settle down upon our troubled soul. “…I set in darkness…”

Thank God for light in times of darkness. Light is revealing and restoring in its effects. Under its influences that which was before concealed becomes manifest are made known to us, new life is put into us, and joy and peace becomes inspired within us.

It is not so much that the Lord caused light to break in upon us; yes that alone is truly glorious, as that He Himself will be with us as our light. “…The lord is my light and my salvation”. This is to say, light in darkness springing from the presence of the Lord, is the thought expressed in these verses.

There will come a time that each of us will pass out of darkness into the light, “…He will bring me forth to the light.” Elijah traveled forty days on one meal, “…and he arose, and did eat and drink, and went in the strength of that meal forty days” (I Kings 19:9.) The Shunammite saw her son’s life restored, “…and took up her son and went out” (II Kings 4:37.) Jacob said of his son Joseph, “…I will go and see him before I die.” To all believers who have a trusting heart, “…The Lord shall be thine everlasting light, and the days of thy mourning shall be end” (Isa.60:20.)
